The pressure needs to be placed on the Opposition leader, David Crisafulli, to review, reform and moderate the coal royalties system. There’s no way he’ll be able to get rid of it altogether, clearly — the State budget would be in too dire a state without it — but as part of a new approach to economic and budget management he should commit to replacing the current system with one more in line with those of other States and international counterparts. The coal companies and business lobbies should be working hard in the lead-up to next year’s election to extract a firm commitment on this from the next Queensland Premier.

The Chook has quit the coop today, leaving her hapless colleagues to clean up the mess (an impossible assignment). Miles and his mob will be booted out in ten months’ time — nothing surer — opening up the possibility of some genuine reform to Queensland’s extortionate coal royalties regime. But that’s a possibility only, not a given; the business lobby and the mining sector now need to put some serious (but sensible) pressure on the current Opposition leader, David Cristafulli.
