You clearly did not do sufficient research or are being pedantic. The nuclear ban (including bans on enrichment) where passed in 1999 which was in prime minister "John" Howard's tenure - he did a deal with the Australian Democrats
"The Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 prohibits certain nuclear actions specified in s.22A unless a federal approval is obtained. It specifically prohibits nuclear power generation in s.140A (an amendment insisted upon by the Australian Democrats). The Act states that the Minister must not approve an action consisting of or involving the construction or operation of a nuclear fuel fabrication plant, or a nuclear power station, or an enrichment plant, or a reprocessing facility"

You clearly lack of understanding of the technology. Before shouting about SLX not being ready decades ago i would suggest that you first read and understand some of the academic papers on the subject:
Suggestions are:

Note from the above that the laser and separator needs to:
1. Provide a stable, high powered and continuous far infrared beam at the precisely tuned wavelength of 15.916 μm to only and completely excite the 235UF6 when wavelength for 238UF6 is only slightly different at 15.931 μm - this is an immensely difficult task
2. The 235UF6 only remains excited for milliseconds (it can be re-excited)
3. The laser beam energy must be absorbed in a supersonic UF6 stream (which is almost transparent) which is a super-critical vapour well below its sublimation temperature
4. Must separate the excited 235UF6/G sub-critical vapour from the unexcited 238UF6/G (using a skimmer, condensation suppression and/or stationary wall centrifuge or combination thereof)
5. Operate reliably as a continuous process with suitable gas handling equipment
6. Defy all the expensive failures to date (AVLIS, MLIS, SILVA (France) etc)
7. Do the works on a shoestring prior to USEC, between USEC and GEH (2002 - 2006) and after GEH dropped it (in 2014) - during these period nuclear sentiment was at "rock bottom"
Please understand the problems before expounding unqualified criticism
