    You do realize that 99% of data downloaded from the net is already heavily compressed. I don't think better file compression is the answer. As fast as compression techniques improve file data size increases.

    Lets take up your example for instance. 3 years ago a RAW image was around 10MB's in size, that's when D-SLR cameras were around 10-12MB's, the latest round of cameras are all around 15-24MP's and the file sizes have more than doubled.

    Music files used to all be 44.1khz - 16 bit (standard CD quality) now you have 192khz - 24bit which more than trebles the file size.

    Then there is movie downloads, DVD's were 4.7GB's in size, now HD Movies are 50GB's in size. In the US they all just download their movies, it's fast and cheap, we're miles away from doing that here.

    I use the net to send large audio files back an forth from my studio to my brothers, it takes forever and i'm the fastest plan i can get.

    If you don't see how desperately we need the NBN your just living well outside of the tech world. You might need it, but your kids do.
