Up to the point where you set the hanger running a liner is not much different from running a casing string. You run liner joints then switch to the drill pipe running string.

I've also been on many wells where liners have been run and by far the biggest issues have been with setting the liner hanger/seal assembly (not related to hole issues) not getting the liner string in the hole. In the case of a malfunctioning liner hanger you then pull the string and re-run it with your back up hanger.

One advantage with a liner over a casing string run to surface is you have more lee way with the shoe depth. If you end up a few metres short of planned shoe depth with a liner you can set the hanger where you are. You can do this with a casing string but you're restricted to adjusting your shoe depth by one casing joint or multiples of same. If youre lucky you might have a casing pup joint of the right length.
