I don’t know about over east but one of the main reasons for the increase in sightings along the Metro coastline of Perth was the absolute absurdity of WA Fisheries turning the stretch of coast from Bunbury to the Moore River into a shark sanctuary.
As well as drastically reduce the number of licences available to fish professionally for sharks because their “scientific research” pointed to the catastrophic decline in the shark population.
Now I’m not suggesting that the research was faulty or that there was no need for a reduction in the number of boats allowed to target sharks but I did know a few people who were in the industry and they weren’t having much difficulty in turning over some reasonable number to make a good living.
They weren’t living like Rock Stars but they were doing okay.
What I found strange about this restructuring wasn’t that it appeared to be a political stunt to appease the Greeny crowd but the fact that they stopped the few boats who remained in the industry from fishing the area where the greatest numbers of WA people swim.
It’s very rare for shark nets to hold a decent sized shark and it is generally the bigger sharks that take on a swimmer/surfer but these beasts have a good memory and being impeded briefly by a net wouldn’t be something that they would forget.
I’m sure the research people would have known this and that’s why the Fisheries Minister’s decision to turn the metro beaches into a sanctuary for sharks must have been purely political.
Then we have the carbon footprint that many of the Ine Nutter’s wank on about.
Closing the remote areas to shark netting would have reduced the need for these fishermen to waste diesel driving to these locations and also would have reduced transportation costs on their product.
