In the case of the globally fungible commodity, coal, you have an industry that has been forced to constrain supply while demand has continued to rise.
In Economics parlance: the supply curve has been forced to the left while the demand curve has kept moving to the right, with the result being an increase in the equilibrium price.
So what is happening should not be surprising, because it is merely a manifestation of a time-honored fundamental economic maxim.
