That's how gigantic the green electricity targets are from now on.
How does the traffic light intend to achieve THAT?

Expansion targets were partly torn in 2023, now they are getting bigger and bigger ...

Germany wants to obtain 80 percent of its electricity from wind and solar energy by 2030.

How can Germany succeed on its way to becoming a pure green electricity nation?
The traffic light government wants to massively expand wind and solar energy on the way to climate neutrality. In addition, there are grids and electricity storage systems. Investments in the three-digit billion range, countless areas and permits are necessary. How this is supposed to work: unclear! However, one thing is certain: the conversion is the law! According to the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), in the interest of climate protection, a greenhouse gas-neutral power supply is to be created that is "based entirely on renewable energies". But is it really possible?

Background: According to the Renewable Energy Sources Act, at least 80 percent of electricity consumption should come from eco-generation by 2030. To achieve this, 115 gigawatts of onshore wind energy and 215 gigawatts of solar energy must be installed in six years.

So far, Germany has 60.6 gigawatts of onshore wind and 80.7 gigawatts of solar. This means that the number of wind turbines and solar panels built so far will have to be roughly doubled in six years.

► This is the balance for 2023 from:

Climate Radar from 29.12.2023 – Infographic

That's how gigantic the goals will be from NOW

► In terms of solar expansion, the annual target for 2023 (9 GW) was far exceeded with an expansion of over 14 GW (14,000 megawatts). That's really good climate news! But: From now on, the goals will rise steeply. In order to meet the EEG targets, 22 GW must be built in each of the next six years. An increase of 60 percent compared to the already very successful expansion in 2023 is needed - every year! By 2024, the target is 13 GW.

▶︎ In the case of wind power expansion, the billing for the past year is significantly worse. The target of 895 wind turbines was missed with 825 wind turbines. Because the nominal output is lower than expected, the balance is even worse: at 3 GW out of 3.9 GW, the expansion remains almost a quarter below the target value. As a result, the goals seem unattainable! By 2024, the target is already 6 GW. By 2030, more than 9 GW will have to be added annually. In other words, the expansion of the past year must even TRIPLE.

With the so-called "Easter package", Economics Minister Robert Habeck (54, Greens) has further increased the targets for the expansion of green electricity

► Mark Helfrich (45), energy policy spokesman for the CDU/CSU, told BILD: "The storage and integration of solar energy into grids will fail miserably." Germany will have to "throw away" huge power peaks in the summer and especially at noon. The situation is different in the case of wind energy, where even the expansion will fail to meet the targets set.

The fact that the lack of road infrastructure in northern Germany - of which the Greens have always opposed - is now hampering the huge heavy-duty transports for the wind turbines is an "irony of history".

▶︎ According to energy economist Prof. Manuel Frondel of the Leibniz Institute, the expansion targets should be questioned for economic reasons "in view of the very sluggish expansion of the electricity grids and the blatant lack of storage options".

▶︎ FDP parliamentary group vice-chairman Lukas Köhler (37) considers the expansion targets to be "ambitious" – but the massive expansion of solar energy last year has shown "that targets can even be exceeded," Köhler told BILD.
