A couple of posters seem to have nailed it for Elroy by saying people use the word pray in bad times when they mean wish or hope, or send good thoughts or vibes without really understanding higher spirituality - but we have all witnessed how the worst times can bring out the best in people. A natural disaster in a country brings out patriotism.
Sometimes people find things in themselves that they didn't even realise were there. It's just human nature imo.
