BYD has a bit of a competitive disadvantage in that Warren Buffet owns 12% of it. Therefore, when sourcing lithium it can't engage in sketchy practices other companies might such as kickbacks to government employees and impoverished living conditions for miners in Africa. So it makes good sense for BYD to be looking at Sigma that has a focus on responsible mining.
Just my opinion of course, I have no evidence regarding the operations of other companies based in China.
