I definitely try to put emotions aside when investing but I have actually found the more ethical companies often significantly outperform. It makes sense intuitively as well, governments favour these companies and will tend to provide favourable regulation etc. A clear example with healthcare is the government literally subsidising our products via reimbursement. On the other hand, governments will often attack casinos, non renewables etc with negative regulation. You do still have to think with your head though and can't just invest in any company because you think it'll do good for people. Plenty of "ethical" companies out there set up to pay their management personnel handsomely without ever delivering a product to market.
