Smiteoff,
It's a good indicator, basically it says there is free oil under pressure greater then the mud weight. There is some a complex pressure regime with fault/fracture system. Hence it's difficult to counter it with out the occasional kick with oil coming up the well. Unless you drill like the previous Russian operator overbalanced and cause formation damage.
