SAO PAULO, Jan 25 (Reuters) - A Brazilian judge ruled that miners Vale VALE3.SA and BHP (BHP) and their joint venture Samarco must pay 47.6 billion reais ($9.67 billion) in damages for a 2015 tailings dam burst, according to a legal decision on Thursday seen by Reuters.

Vale and Samarco did not immediately respond to requests for comment. BHP said it was not informed by the judiciary about the decision.

The dam collapse in the southeastern city of Mariana caused a giant mudslide that killed 19 people and severely polluted the Rio Doce river, compromising the waterway to its outlet in the Atlantic Ocean.

It was not immediately clear how much of the total each company still owes.

The Renova foundation, which the companies used to pay for some of the repairs, had paid until last September 33.4 billion reais, the firms had said earlier. ($1 = 4.9237 reais)
