I think the CTL process looks great.
1) Unlike with Fischer-Tropsch there is no gasification of the coal, so little or no CO2 output.
2) It produces "pitch" or bitumen, for which there exist numerous proven upgrading technologies developed for the Canadian oil sands.
3) Synthetic coke is a by-product, which can't be bad considering the outlook for coking coal.
Of course it will take a while to get it all working at a large scale and at a reasonable cost, but NHC has the fire power to do that without recourse to dilution, and it can afford to take its time and get things right.
