About 25km2 of jarrah forest and agricultural land has been laid waste by coal mining at Collie. Token efforts at rehabilitation were made by the operating companies before they were sold out to foreign interests years ago. The State of WA has always paid too much for the crappy coal and now they are shelling out even more to keep the unprofitable industry on life support for another few years. The companies will wind up their operations without any further rehab happening, and the State and its citizens will be left with the mess.
The commodity doesn't change the tactic; you just have to shut up shop and walk away.
