Indeed, independent thought is the best kind. I find that 'regular' citizens make very good historians. It only takes passion and reading.
Ancient History mostly, Greek, Roman, Hebraic and a little modern. My favourite is Middle Ages especially initial early Crusader Era and 16th Century Reformation.
