    @dazaliam

    Well that is open to debate on what was the actual downfall of Morila, as it would depend of who the narrator was, what month and whether the measures to mitigate the effects the sanctions were having worked.
    ~ it is extremely difficult, more like impossible to actually reflect back and believe anything that come out of their mouths but that is the magic of hindsight.
    ~ the departed leader/s Cowden & Anderson, would argue that the sanctions weren't having any effect considering in one instance they engaged a 3rd mining contractor to "mitigate" any impacts, but that was due to the highly paid ME-IM only made available or presented with old equipment?
    ~ Seriously, the contract terms was estimated at US$360 million (A$458 million) and they were trying to get the job done with old equipment?
    To the (expletive deleted) point of Firefinch paying circa US$1.22 million (A$1.649 million) a month to pick up the slack with contractor #3.

    Burkina Faso, Niger & Mali leaving ECOWAS might have more impact on ECOWAS than ECOWAS might have on them?
    ~ the 3 countries were the founding members of ECOWAS

    It was more, why would anything change, as there are no border closures or sanctions currently in place,

    Not saying it won't happen but to what end would they impose sanctions again, the sanctions were imposed to force the return of civilian rule was it not?
    ~ it didn't work previously, and as the military run governments have taken a combined stance, I would opine it would have less chance of working now?
    ~ the government has already agreed to election, but the February elections have been postponed with no date.
    ~ social media sites that I follow, the people of Mali I engage with all love their interim leader whether that is influenced by jail if you speak out or they genuinely do love their current leader and what he is doing for the good of Mali.

    One of the other measures ECOWAS were threatening Mali with, was military intervention which is somewhat interesting as requests for assistance with the increased insurgencies linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State, have not been responded to. The 3 states formed a mutual defence pact (the Alliance of Sahel States) in September, the withdrawal from ECOWAS is the final step after previously distancing themselves from colonial French influences.

    cheers
