If the figures on Shortman.com.au are to be believed, short interest in WBT on the 1st of December was 10.43M and the share price was $3.46 at the close (having traded as low as $3.35 that day).
Now, Shortman is telling us that on the 23rd of January, short interest is 16.25M and the share price closed at $3.52 (close to the day's low).
All those extra shorts (nearly 6M) and the share price has gone up. Not to mention the extra 33c in the last few days or nearly 10%.
If you look back even further, shorts were 12.27M on the 9th of October and the share price was only $2.84! Whichever way you look at it, they are getting more desperate and still losing money while needing to pay to borrow
Go back to 1 September 2023 and shorts were 9.1M and the price was $3.92 (spitting distance to today). So shorts have increased by 7.15M for basically nil benefit.
The smart money might have made some money in the first couple of months in March last year when they pushed it down very quickly on the capital raise, but since then WBT has held up very well under intense short pressure. Will be interesting to see what happens if that is reversed...
