    Hi

I am serious about wanting to know the ins and outs of this issue, as my friends talk about it a lot, but there are no technicians amongst my friends and nobody is prepared to admit ignorance.

I know Abbott will try and kill it. I have no personal interest in blaming or promoting either the Libs or Labor.

I also know that by now a lot of people will feel quite deprived if they can't get 'superfast' broadband - I am not one of them, I don't download movies, I don't day-trade - really I cannot see why the present infrastructure needs replacing.

However, I believe we will be getting NBN, whether we individually want it or not and the Government (you and I) will come up with the cost. For one, it will be a convenient bone to chew the cud over (i.e. endless discussions and posturings in Parliament over this issue), avoiding more difficult - and possible urgent - issues.

What is Telstra's role in all of this? Will they get the benefit of a more glamorous service (hence more customers) without having to pay for it? Or will all telephony and internet companies share the benefits equally?

No Dorothy Dixer here - I am truly ignorant on this issue; any answers or re-directions gratefully accepted.

    Cheers

    Taurisk
