When electric Jeep's came out in the US the company installed stand-alone solar/battery chargers in popular remote destinations (usually at main carparks in National Parks). That was about 2/3 years ago, G, and I haven't seen anything about it since, or whether it was a success. Even so, as the number of 4x4 EV's grow in number your Simpson Desert proposal makes more and more sense. As does the highway dynamic of charging stations where I see a new era of electric service stations operating along the same power supply and storage lines. In the years to come the traditional servo will morph into a car park with charging points and fine dining (for the road) while you wait - and maybe one petrol/diesel pump off in the corner - is how I see it evolving.
