This is what the coalition did to help with the cost of living
The 2022-23 Budget measure Addressing Cost of Living Pressures – temporary reduction in fuel excise, temporarily halved fuel excise for 6 months – from 30 March 2022 to 28 September 2022. As a consequence, the excise rate for petrol and diesel fell to 22.1 CPL, below the prevailing RUC of 26.4 CPL.
The latest fuel excise rise takes effect on Monday 5 February 2024 and sees the excise rate increase from 48.8 cents per litre to49.6 cents per litre. While 0.8 cents is by no means a dramatic rise, the latest increase will mean close to $40 in total excise costs per tank for a large SUV with an 80-litre fuel tank.
