Just how much bandwidth does it take?

How much bandwith does a household of 5 people to all be simultaneously video conferencing, watching online video or in a virtual environment? Look at your bandwidth usage on a skype video call... But you want it all in HD 3D etc, how much is that? A 1.5 hour HD movie in 30 minutes at 10Mbps so 3 people watching real time simultaneously.

I have done a lot of remote logging for my science work, data feeds from that are minimal compared with voice data even. What can medical and educational applications require that is more bandwidth than video? Well look at how to get this information into your head, is there any better way than visual ... and we get by on 2.4m optical nerve fibres!

HD video conferencing is a good way to start, that is a great benefit to business, but I think only about 2Mbps per link. You may want to have 20 people and think 2*20Mbps, but I am sure software can be innovative there, determining where you are looking and focusing HD detail on that person. How often would your family use that though?

Virtual school at home, in some cases maybe ok but I think I would still have my kids go to school and do virtual learning there where appropriate but still go out to the playground with other kids at lunch time.

My point in the previous post was we are getting carried away by nice sounding emotive comments from politicians, and businesses that have a vested interest to benefit from this. Applications good for the family, education, entertainment, communications, business will benefit from the NBN so if you are against the NBN you are throwing away our future ... But who has come up with a real time application where 10Mbps is not going to work? Shown something that we can not do?

If the 10Mbps network had been started 2 years ago instead pushing the goal posts to dream heights then maybe we would have these applications running now and find where they are lacking. I am sure that when the backbone and exchanges are all upgraded and clear of both government regulation and monopoly control, the future steps to the premises will be clearer
