Well over 90% of the hydrogen available today is refined from fossil fuels, mainly gas.

Refining hydrogen from water is simply an inefficient method of storing energy for later use.
It's inefficient to produce, very difficult to store, and very difficult to transport.

These limits are not technological - they are physical. The physics of hydrogen make it extremely difficult to work with. Hydrogen can ONLY be liquified below -240°C under pressure, or below -252°C at ambient pressure. This is extremely costly and inefficient.

Further - I guarantee you that no one will invest millions into hydrogen refinery infrastructure and ONLY operate is when there is excess power available in the grid. This can only become "economically viable" with enormous subsidies.

The only exception I can see is increasing the use of natural gas as a feedstock - and finding some use for the extracted carbon atoms.
