It depends upon what type of loan or facility he has. Most major banks have private banker facilities for high net worth persons, CEO of ASX companies, etc, especially if they already hold residential security. (which I think he recently bought an expensive house in Sydney).
Even average day person can borrow 95% against residential security as long as they can service the loan over 30 years. I expect he put up the shares to achieve an overall lower interest rate.
