Ask a former regulator to look at the problem and what do you get - 36 recommendations that are mostly about regulate this, regulate that, have more ACCC inquiries, review competition laws etc. Is that really the best outcome?
The most obvious thing coming out of this to me was the line - "Competition is far less than it should be in Australia.".
The focus needs to be on how to increase competition in all these industries - groceries, banking, airlines etc.
But does the government even care and does it really want to encourage competition in these areas? For example that Qatar decision seems horrific when it is so clear that more competition is needed to stop airfare gouging.
We could be stuck with cosy duopolies and oligopolies forever
