Honda and Toyota both went the Hydrogen path decades ago there's an old Top Gear episode with James May driving a Hydrogen powered Honda in LA.
The issues both companies found with Hydrogen are still relevant today.
Expensive to produce, Compressing and storage issues and finally distribution.
On theory, Hydrogen is the way to go, practicality, not so much.
With EV's I believe Toyota have said that at this point, Hybrids are the way to go until infrastructure catches up to suit such a large number of EV's on the road.
Hydrogen makes sense for depot to depot heavy vehicles like trucks and buses, even trains.
