Can you explain to us how a Liberal govt would have been good for Telstra shareholders? I understand that they would have likely scrapped the NBN, but how would the Liberal's policy for investment into wireless compete with Telstra's existing services? From what I gather, the NBN will no longer compete for retail business and will be a wholesale provider, in addition to buying Telstra's aging and high maintenance landline network.
Any serious observer should take into account that since the Liberal's privatisation of Telstra the SP has largely been on a downward trend. The same cannot be said with Labor's privatisation of the CBA or QAN, so bringing up Thatcher in the Australian context is politically and economically analogous. And I hardly consider the modern Labor Party a socialist party - QLD Labor govt privatising rail, coal ports, NSW Labor privatising electricity, lotteries, Vic Labor privatising rail - with all Liberal/National parties opposing all measures (even though it is within their policy platforms). If you're looking for socialism in Australia, you need not look further than the Coalition partners - the Nationals, that yell and scream when anything gets privatised or opened to more competition - e.g. AWB.
And why are you conflating the ACCC with the Labor Govt? The position of the ACCC has not changed between governments. They have always been harking on the separation of Telstra's monopolistic assets. At least with the Labor govt, they are paying a nice premium for it.
