It's the enthusiastic emotional traders that give the stock the gap up rise, the shorter term traders see the gap up opportunity to sell into it and perhaps scoop up more closer to the gap closing, other buyers are often sitting closer to the gap as well. It all depends on the magnitude of the announcement too
