This event highlighted some of the short comings of large baseload generation.
The power station tripped because of the fault. That's what it's designed to do.
ln reality the local protection probably dealt with the short. The instant loss of a large load was probably what caused Loy Yang to trip. There are all kinds of other protection devices that would take it offline.
Either way, once the power station is offline it can take days to get back on online as we've seen.
When Loy Yang went off they looked to nearby Yallourn power station for support. Unfortunately half of Yallourn was offline for maintenance which takes it out for weeks or months at a time .
The achillies heel of large baseload. Not very flexible.
Once the location of the power line fault is isolated from the rest of the grid, generation operations can go back to normal . This is where renewables and battteries are superior. Once the fault is isolated , renewable and batteries can continue to supply electricity straight away.
Unlike poor old coal.
