As far as power generation, at times of peak demand there seems to be insufficient capacity - is it any wonder as with population increases where are increases in providing more base load

Yes there are occasions, a few hours a few days of the year in each jurisdiction, that forecast grid supply vs forecast demand can be borderline.

Quite a few years ago the network managers forecast that electricity demand would keep growing but instead around the time of the GFC that didn't happen.

On the one hand you had people installing airconditioning units that became more affordable but tend to get switched on at the same time of day when people come home from work causing a spike in demand and on the other hand you have the rollout of home solar panels which have caused the development of the Duck Curve electricity demand. Added to this we have more efficient gadgets like televisions, fridges lighting and so on.

The Duck Curve is playing hell with the grid and has resulted in the need for more responsive forms of generation and storage to be installed.
On the spot energy market when prices go negative the unresponsive generators end up paying to generate electricity while those that can respond quickly can curtail.

So recently electricity generators have been installing things like gas powered equipment comprising multiple units that can be fired up in stages and shutdown in minutes.
The emphasis has been on responsive, medium time frame generation for the energy market and grid stability infrastructure for the FCAS market along with short term storage so those spending the money can earn a return on their investment.

For the longer term we probably need an electricity Czar to take control of the National Electricity Market instead of leaving things up to market forces where competitor financial decisions are affected by what other competitors are doing.
At the moment it's been decided that gas is the transitional fuel while they cross their fingers and hope that water can be turned into hydrogen by electrolysis more economically than is the case currently.
