I get your point and disagree. per capita is a measure used to identify the waste of energy by the average individual in any given nation. it enables a better understanding of our inefficient use of electricity.
measuring energy consumption by area of land only refers to the expanse of land/energy consumption. land doesn't use energy. its thus a false measurement.
the fact of the matter is that we are so accustomed to our affluent lifestyle in Aus that we love to waste resources such as energy. we feel rich so we don't care how much electricity we use. so people leave lights on unnecessarily, leave the pool pump running when no-one is using the pool, we buy fridges that are less efficient and use more electricity than if we were buying according to insulation and energy consumption.
as such our carbon footprint needs to reflect our consumption.
