Jailed Russian opposition politician Ilya Yashin says Putin had 'motive and opportunity' to kill Navalny

Russian opposition politician Ilya Yashin has said he is "convinced" Vladimir Putin ordered the killing of Alexei Navalny as he had both "motive and opportunity".

Paying tribute to Mr Navalny in a Telegram post, Mr Yahsin, who was jailed for eight years in 2022 for spreading "fake news" on the Ukraine war, said there was "no question" what happened to the Russia opposition leader.

"I have no doubt it was Putin - he's a war criminal," he said.

"Navalny was his key opponent in Russia and a source of hatred in the Kremlin. Putin had both motive and opportunity. I'm convinced that he ordered the killing."

He went on to say that it was "Mr Putin's understanding that this is how power is asserted".

"Through murder, cruelty, and demonstrative revenge. This is not the thinking of a statesman, this is the mindset of a gang leader," he added.

"So let's honestly admit Putin is the leader of the mafia structure that has merged with our state."

Mr Yashin said he "dreamed" that Mr Putin would "answer for his crimes".

He said: "I'm behind bars, my life is in Putin's hands, and it's in danger but I will continue to stick to my line."

The opposition politician ended his message by sharing a picture of himself with Mr Navalny.
