"If Colesworth profit margins are 6%, and you think it needs to come down to say, 2%, won't all that do is bring a $100 grocery shop down to $96?"
About $96.2264 I think.
Lots of people seem to think that supermarkets would be the cheapest place to buy without actually putting any time into investigating it. There are many examples of items that are consistently cheaper elsewhere. Many non-prescription meds are way cheaper at the chemist, gardening products are usually cheaper at you-know-where, and there's nothing wrong with the facial tissues at the local $2 'junk shop' (although they seem to have leapt up in price everywhere since COVID).
A vitamin I used to buy was at ½-price at my local Woolies recently ... and still more expensive than the big pharmacy chain. Of course they usually have different quantity packaging to make it harder to compare.
And then there's markets and farmers' markets and farm-gate.
BTW, that 6% margin - I simply don't believe that.
