The decision to pay a div is part of a policy announced by the bard a few to paraphrasing to pay out 40% of annual profits after a major commitments, including exploration. In that, they were roughly mirroring the mature major miners like BHP & Rio. I consider them a blue chip. (and now I will get the slings and arrows for those who like to kick an entity when it's down). It's happened before when they were a gold nickel player.
However, I've always regretted not buying them when they were 40c, $1, $2 and everything up to $4. The dividend has grown (un)steadily with that.
