The distortion of the market that short selling causes is irrefutable as you have so clearly outlined @yaschmidt my friend.
At the height of the GameStop boom 140% (YES 140%!!) of their public float was shorted. Borrowed shares loaned again out to a third party, and loaned out again to the next stooge/gambler in that situation…
Shorter’s can bleat all day long about their precious practice. The clear irrefutable fact though is that it distorts the market.
There are other available avenues to hedge your bets.
Shorting distorts and unbalances the playing field unfairly for all stocks.
It needs to be banned.
