Jan Stoltenberg clearly stated: Russia invaded Ukraine over fears of NATO expansion.
As per Davyd Arakhamia (high-level Ukrainian politicion) the only key thing that Russia was asking from Ukraine is to agree to neutrality and non-alignment with NATO. Plus some other "political seasoning".
