You may have noticed increasing attention is being paid to the growing number of explorers on the asx that call Mongolia home for exploration and hopefully production.
The reasons for this interest are many but since since the rebound in commodity prices in 2009/10 and just as
important the Mongolian government's change away from a high percent profits tax to more investment friendly tax base, major and junior company alike seem to have taken a new look (and their cheque book) at Mongolia. The aim is to tap a highly mineralised region with relatively low levels of past exploration that sits on China's doorstep.
The two beacons for mongolia resource boom are the Tavan Tolgoi coal deposit and Oyu Tolgoi, the largest undeveloped copper gold deposit in the industry being developed by Ivanhoe mines, Rio Tinto and the Mongolian government. Mongolia is wedged between China and Russia yet infrastructure poor and this will be one the key issues, if not the largest hurdle for asx listed entities to enter production in the region. In addition to Mongolia expect to see further interest in comining months in select central asian countries and through the Tethyan copper gold belt as explorers and majors chase higher returns with higher prices once again.
A few stocks that are focused and already running well in Mongolia are listed below plus two "new" recapitalised shell companies looking to enter the region. Major risks include commodity prices, continued exploration finance, infrastructure, weather, sovereign risk and paying too much for too little for acquisitions and/or during early exploration phases.
Mongolia in the news;
Mongolian Mining Corp. (MMC), Mongolia's largest privately-owned coking coal producer,
is targeting as much as HK$5.44 billion (US$701mn) in its IPO on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
