Why gas is important is, because a Gas Turbine Frame 6 can be switched on remotely and be up to full speed in 9 mins. It can be shut down just as quickly. It has much less man power to operate it than coal which makes it effecient and if the biggest by product heat can be utilised for other processes like Calcination plants, it becomes very useful.
The bigest problem with renewables is they are heavily subsidised by Governments allowing them to bid negative electricity prices deterring further renewable projects as there is no pay back on the initial investment. Renewables all supply energy at the same time and if there is not enough storage capabilities, we are stuffed. Whoever solves that "Rosetta Stone", will be a very rich person.
And by Governments subsidising renewables means the consumers are paying extra, by the way of taxes.
The only stop gap we have for 24 Hr electricity supply to coincide with renewables is Gas!
