Those were the times. I was a few km away when it happens and didn't even realised what happened over night until next morning when my Polish travel group didn't appear at breakfast. All gone to West Berlin. Similar to the IMU walls, gone in a blink of an eye when the bigger forces finally want them to be torn down.
When we see walls torn down on TV these days it means death and destruction, at least back then it gave us "Ossis" the chance for a bit more freedom and wealth and to become an "Aussie". From reciting phrases of Marx / Engels and Lenin to applying the principles of capitalism to ride the stock market, what a journey moving forwards regarding accumulating wealth but going backwards according to M/E/L.
The truth probably lies in the middle, the Lord always takes good care of a good communist.
