Employees of power giant AGL risk having their bonuses cut, and performance reviews marked down if they fail to come into the office at least three days each week.

The policy, which puts the company in line with its rival Origin Energy and financial services firms such as ANZ and Suncorp Group, is a fresh example of a white-collar employer trying to strike a balance between giving staff flexibility and promoting sufficient face-to-face interaction to support mentoring and long-term productivity.

It comes as the Fair Work Commission investigates whether it should give the more than two million Australians covered by industry awards the right to request working-from-home arrangements – an expansion of an entitlement currently reserved for select groups of workers designated under the Fair Work Act.
