Truth be told, he WAS in Darwin at the time - slept right though Tracy - in nice comfortable, undamaged army barracks - then was assigned to assist in the traffic control of vehicles leaving Darwin in the days after.
They were then sent on R&R then came back on rotation to continue the clean-up.
The Navy guys did all the initial hard work - they were all there a few days after and did a magnificent job for at least a month, when the Army took over.
