I have been looking at the trade volumes over the last few weeks and they have been undoubtedly high but the trade data I get tells me precious little else.
I learnt something new on Thursday when I tried to place a limited price order from Friday only to be told that I could not do it before the market opened and then it could only run for 1 day. Apparently you can only place limit orders within a certain range based on the opening price and trades are matched so you don't have market makers in the sense that we have them in the UK. This means I have to be up at 2am (I don't like to trade at opening or closing time because it is common for spreads to widen).
In the UK we often come across people that read the trades data and immediately go down the conspiracy route but they are almost always wrong partly because the indication of buy or sell is always indicative and not guaranteed.
Having said that here is my point, Friday's trades of RDS indicate 208,353 buys and 329,164 sells so on the face of it the price should have fallen but this just tells me there is inaccurate reporting of buy/sell. However there is one interesting fact out there and that is the highest price reported for the day was indeed a sell as indicated because it involved me top slicing my holding.
I can't really draw conclusions on what this means in Aus because I have very little knowledge of your system but over here it would probably mean that there was a very large buy order being worked and it will be reported on Monday when it is completed. I see no negative reason for the sell price on Friday ending up at 0.455. Comments on this phenomenon would be welcome.
