Yes it's happening in other parts of the world too.
Hydrogen is the next logical step forward, as there's an abundance of it and no need to rely on the amount of raw materials that go into producing traditional lithium batteries. In saying that the technology still has a way to go, as well as the methods/costs of producing it. Pros and cons with all renewables. But just like we saw with mass-produced BEV's, they sat stale for almost 25 years because of similar barriers - cost blowouts, not efficient to run, technological limits, ICE were cheaper to run (still are in certain cases), regulation, the list goes on etc.
IMO, BEV won't have as much time exclusively (if any exclusivity on a mass-scale) on the roads like gas/diesels have experienced, once we're all gray and old and ICE vehicles are no more. As technological advances snowball at faster and faster rates, this makes way for hydrogen renewables, and who knows in 40 years there may be other more efficient sources discovered.
