Former Ukrainian ship was 'being prepared for use against Ukraine'

We're getting more information now on the ship Ukraine announced it hit with a missile this morning.

Ukrainian navy spokesperson Dmytro Pletenchuk said the Konstantin Olshansky landing ship had been renovated and was "being prepared for use against Ukraine".

This is why the decision was made to strike it with a Ukrainian-made Neptune anti-ship missile, he added.

It's roughly a decade since the ship was seized by Russia as it annexed Crimea. The picture below is from 23 March, 2014 as the Ukrainian crew leave the ship which had been blockaded by Russian forces.

Ukraine still controls several hundred miles of Black Sea coastline but does not have any large warships.

But it has conducted a series of strikes on Russia's Black Sea Fleet using missiles or seaborne drones.

On Sunday, Kyiv claimed strikes on two other Russian landing ships in Crimea.
