The Albanese government will dedicate $1 billion in subsidies, grants and other forms of support to the domestic production of solar panels, including in the coal-rich Hunter Valley.As part of a budget package that will attempt to rival the Biden administration’s Inflation Reduction Act, the prime minister will unveil his latest policy on Thursday at the site of the decommissioned coal-fired Liddell power station in NSW.
He argued that if Australia were to become a renewable energy superpower, “the government has to be a partner in this, not just an observer”.Two weeks ago, he pledged an $840 million package of loans and grants to help Gina Rinehart-backed Arafura Rare Earths develop its Northern Territory mine and refinery.Thursday’s announcement of a $1 billion investment in the Solar Sunshot program “will supercharge Australia’s ambition to become a renewable energy superpower at home and abroad”, the prime minister contended.
