Plough, I'm glad you've had the opportunity of visiting the area. It is as amazing (and more) as you describe and little has changed - tho Tyndrum village has had some modernisation.
The villagers are immensely proud of their area and are as determined as you for the area not to be ruined in any way at all, but jobs are scarce there and seasonal tourism simply isn't enough for them. 50 odd fulltime LOCAL jobs could be created if the mine were to get the go-ahead.
The TMF is the main stumbling block & if a solution could be found, the mine would surely proceed. As far as roading is concerned, I believe the waste will be too fine. Re the practicalities of putting the tailings back down the mine - I have no idea.
