Right now you are witnessing some brilliant psyops being conducted. (I am waiting for the "Welfare Cheats" rhetoric to get recycled.)
A really good tactic for attacking the political involvement of Australians is to convince them that their vote doesn't matter.
The number of informal (ie not legible/valid) votes every election would be enough to swing the balance of power. If someone was able to bring that percentage down, it would make a huge difference to our political system I feel. Are they illiterate, or just drawing genatlaia on the form to "protest"?
The "Protest artwork" ballots were really very samey when I saw them 3 decades ago - I guess each one thought that they were being original.
The smarter advertising campaign would be aimed at those "swinging"voters - some hting like
"Draw a picture, BUT put these numbers in first to really stick it to the man!!"
A correctly numbered vote with several Richards on it is STILL a valid vote. They can write a lot of things on the outside of it, but if they have numbered it correctly, they get counted.
