External independent to hire means sourcing and refining the candidates. When you get down to the shortlist having worked with someone before carries a lot of weight as do recommendations from people you have worked with or know well. At that level, the pool is very small. Even when I was a metallurgist at a level far below that one person knew about me I would never have expected. The bottom line is don't be a (+/- useless ) pr---k.
I suppose the term shave changed but the sentiment won't have.
(Of course, I'm talking like this buoyed by the upturn in resources particularly U & Cu. If you'd asked me a few months a go I would have felt just like one of those!)
