This is a procedure I went through in 2011 when moving overseas.
Firstly Google 'ATO Private Ruling' and have a read of what may be or become relevent to you.
If you intend to move away permanantly it's worth applying for a private ruling.
The decisions and terms on your application for a Private Ruling are made by the Commissioner Of Taxes are in writing and are binding. So avoids any disputes or interpreations by the ATO at a later date.
My suggestion would be to seek advice from an Accountant who is versed in Private Ruling for non residents. Not all accountants are.
Although I was living in WA at the time I used the services of accountant in NSW who came recommended, and had carried out the procedure for a bunch of my work buddies working and residing overseas.
Best money I ever spent.
