so the language is based on Arabic but the country is still regarded as being part of Europe/southern Europe

so whatever are seeing is the fact that historically people roamed around the Mediterranean and languages reflect the dominant groups to a greater of lesser extent.

It surprised me also...I have a good friend who's Maltese and never connected him to the Arab world. Always assumed him more Italian.
