BYD's Blade 2 battery will be released this year. It is a lithium battery, and the cost saving means that next year it should be selling EVs for less than the equivalent ICE model. When cost of ownership is taken into account, a Dolphin is already a cheaper car than, say, a Yaris. This has come about because lithium batteries keep on getting cheaper and will continue to do so.
BYD's sodium battery doesn't have the range of the lithium equivalents, but it could be good for city cars which don't need such long range. Even then, the company decided to put lithium batteries in the Dolphin, not the sodium models it was planning. Even with sodium as competition, demand for lithium batteries is going to go vertical because EVs are a better technology, falling in price, while ICE cars are going up.
